Dialog becomes first Sri Lankan firm to bag Twitter account verification

Sri Lanka’s largest mobile service provider Dialog Axiata PLC has become the first corporate entity in Sri Lankan to attain verification by social networking and microblogging service ‘Twitter’ which allows organisations or individuals to engage with followers.



Twitter, sometimes described as the SMS (short Message Service) of the internet is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text based posts, informally known as tweets, of up to 140 characters. Dialog Axiata was officially verified by Twitter on 1 December 2011.

Dialog Axiata, with over 2,000 GSM and 1,200 3G base stations and growing is the largest mobile service provider and one of the largest ICT based solutions providers in the island joined Twitter on 29 September 2008, was one of the first Sri Lankan brands on the social network.

Currently there are 4,000 subscribers who follow Dialog Axiata on Twitter.

In just five years since its inception Twitter has registered over 300 million users as of 2011, generating over 300 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.

Dialog has been very much a part and parcel of the local Twitter community engaging with local Tweeps (twitter users) carrying out promotions as well as providing customer support via twitter.  Dialog was also instrumental in facilitating TweetupSL, the Largest Gathering of Sri Lankan Tweeps, for the past two years.

“The endorsement by Twitter is in fact an endorsement of our continuous focus in engaging the online community and is testament to the quality of relationships we manage online,” Ahmed Irfan, Head of Group Marketing Communications at Dialog Axiata PLC said.
