Dialog launches Sri Lanka’s first-ever NFC enabled smart sticker

Premier mobile solutions provider Dialog Axiata PLC has launched Sri Lanka’s first NFC (Near Field Communication) technology enabled Smart Sticker, which would allow its users to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a simple touch. The NFC sticker is an evolvement of the present NFC technology card system is offering greater convenience and practicality to users of the new technology. NFC technology, first commercially launched in Sri Lanka by Dialog in 2012 is already used in card form has gained popularity amongst motorist who use NFC enabled cards at fuel stations for the cashless settlement of fuel bills. NFC enabled fuel card settlement POS (Point of Sale) machines are already available at selected LIOC (Lanka Indian Oil Company) and Laugfs fuel sheds island-wide. The NFC sticker can be pasted on a phone, wallet, key tag or on any item that is frequently carried while commuting. NFC is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology, which enables the exchange of data between devices over about a 10 centimetre (around 4 inches) distance by simply tapping his/her sticker at a POS machine and save the hassle of filling out, signing and handing over forms, which would then need to be tabulated. Users would be notified of the transaction immediately via SMS (Short Message Service), while they could also log-into maintain and view their fuel quota balance. Administrators at the company, the supplier and users can simply log into the system and monitor the data which would be available instantly whilst predetermined times and limits could also be fed into the system. The automated system will reduce administrative hours from much as 30 days to a simple push of a button. The technology is gaining popularity in the supermarket, health care, mobile payment and public transport businesses. “This is the next phase in the development of NFC technology and will pave the way to offer a wider range of services to Sri Lankan consumers,” Dialog Axiata PLC Senior General Manager Mobile Money and Payments Fariq Cader said. “In the near future NFC enabled devices will be part of everyone’s day-to-day lives will offer unparallel levels of convenience and security to stay in pace with today’s fast-paced lifestyles,” Cader added. NFC based pay-as-you-go touch cards are an immensely popular payment gateway in Europe and in selected countries in South-East Asia, especially to pay for tickets in public transport such as underground tube rail and intra city bus services. The NFC ecosystem was developed by Dialog, while MIT (Millennium Information Technology) developed the fuel application and Access International offers the POS machinery.
