For the first time ever, Singer Sri Lanka is organising a countrywide E-Waste Day on 19 May in furtherance of its commitment to fighting the growing electronic waste problem.
Singer Sri Lanka has always displayed a commitment to the community at large. In 2010, the company was among the first organisations to sign up for the CEA’s Electronic Waste Management Project. Singer has processed over 142 tonnes of e-waste since then.
Singer Sri Lanka Commercial Director Mahesh Wijewardene said, “At Singer, we are always mindful of our role in society. As one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned brands, it is imperative that we provide leadership in educating our customers and the community-at-large about the problem of e-waste.”
E-waste is an umbrella term that includes by unwanted electronic items that have no reuse value. Electronic items typically use materials that are hazardous to our environment and health. A policy to gather, segregate and dispose of this waste in a sustainable and environmentally safe manner is therefore essential.
“This year, we hope to mark E-Waste Day by inviting customers to drop off their e-waste at any of our physical premises island wide, including all of our retail outlets and service centres. In addition, Singer vehicles will also visit certain areas to collect electronic items that members of the public no longer need,” continued Mahesh.
E-waste in Sri Lanka is increasing as consumers buy more electronic items. These items contain heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury while the plastic covers and wires inside these items contain hazardous materials.
Recognised as one of the Most Respected Entities in Sri Lanka, Singer is continually seeking ways to make the most positive impact possible on the country. With an extensive retail network that includes more than 370 outlets island-wide, customers can conveniently drop off their e-waste and do their part to help the environment at any Singer Plus, Singer Mega, Singer Homes, or Sisil World outlet or at any Singer service centres on any day of the year.
