ESET introduces Smart Security 6

What if someone looses their laptop, which in today’s digital age would carry everything from the individual’s personal data to work info?

Whilst frustration would be the governing emotion at that point, the only option one would think available to them would be to lodge a complaint at the nearest police station and hope against hope that the Police would find it. Apart from that there was practically nothing one could do!

But that was in the past - with innovation being what it is today, there is another solution available to safeguarding ones laptop.  Smart Security 6, the Internet security package offered by ESET is all set to address this problem in a formidable way, assuring security for laptop users. Its anti-theft feature technically rules out the possibility of a laptop getting stolen. For instance, as soon as a laptop gets stolen, the feature enables the owner to notify it to a website ‘www.myeset.com’. The website works as a virtual detective and informs the owner on the whereabouts of the laptop within a very short period of time, with minute details such as pictures, location and the IP address of the thief.

“How this happens is very interesting. The moment the thief logs into the internet from your laptop, the security system recognises it and takes a picture of his face using the webcam of the machine. In addition, it identifies his location using Google maps. And immediately, you will receive a mail containing his picture, location and the IP address. Even the Police cannot ignore such information. From there onwards, finding the laptop and apprehending the culprit becomes an easy task,” says Shihan Annon, Director of DCS International (PVT) Limited, the parent company of ESET in Sri Lanka.

The anti-theft feature is actually one aspect of this broad security system, which is an upgrade to Smart Security 5, the previous security package offered by ESET. It also includes features such as improved and dedicated anti-phishing modules, ESET Social Media Scanner and greater detection of infiltrations, improved cleaning and faster scanning due to the enhanced engine.

Anti-phishing is an equally important feature not only for local users, but also for global users as it blocks theft of data while purchasing something online. In a backdrop where we often hear about online scams and data thefts, this ensures the safety of credit or debit card data during an online purchase.  “This feature protects users from attempts to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords or banking and credit card details by fake websites masquerading as trustworthy ones. This, we firmly believe, will allay the fears of local users to a great extent. When this is implemented, users will not have to worry about the security of their credit card or bank details being compromised when purchasing something online. This, in other words, creates the freedom of purchasing! ” Annon added.

The new security system also offers something of great importance to Facebook and social media users, freeing them from the threat of malware. It is technically an online scanning system that cleans your Facebook profile from malware. For instance, if you are tagged in a photo which is malware-infected, the security system immediately cleans it. The feature not only protects you, but also protects your Facebook friends from malicious content (malware), including profile, the wall, newsfeed and private messages. Apart from that, the anti-virus and anti-spyware features it has, provides proactive protection against all types of online/offline threats and prevents malware spreading to other users.

Another important aspect of the product, says Annon, is that it is also compatible with Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 8, which makes the security system more appealing tousers of the latest OS.

Parallel to Smart Security 6, ESET launches its latest anti-virus system ESET NOD32 Antivirus 6, an advanced antivirus solution that provides effective protection against viruses and spyware, while leaving a minimal footprint on computer resources.

ESET NOD 32 is a defence system that protects the computer without bothering you with constant pop-ups or prompts- a key concern for most anti-virus users across the world. Another important feature of this is the ‘’Self Defence’’ which blocks attempts from malicious applications to disable its features. “Therefore it is a very robust and stable antivirus system that does not affect the convenience of the user” he said.

One of the most popular complaints against anti-viruses is that they make PCs and laptops slow to the point of frustration. This new anti-virus, on the contrary, has paid special attention to prevent the slow down in the functioning of the computer.
