By Senuri De Silva Tech industry giant Dell introduced its most advanced server portfolio to address a broad range of business computing needs during the first ever Sri Lankan leg of the Dell Solutions Tour 2014, held at the BMICH last Tuesday. The tour, organised by Dell, was centered on a theme of ‘IT Transformation’ and introduced the latest tech solutions based on four pillars: transform, connect, inform and protect. Dell representatives Dell Enterprise Solutions - South Asia General Manager Sumir Bhatia discussed the latest solutions provided by Dell in terms of cloud technology, end user computers, data analytics and security. According to him, these solutions allow companies to reduce their IT budgets and become more efficient by using faster computers and reducing the required storage space for servers. He pointed out that Dell allows more freedom of choice and flexibility for customers by refraining from claiming propriety on their products, saying, “It’s like having a car that you can only get fixed at one place. Customers don’t want that”. Bhatia, together with Dell Country Manager Lackshmindra Fernando and Intel Country Business Manager Indika De Zoysa, also launched the new PowerEdge 13 Generation Server Portfolio which was the highlight of the event. These new servers feature customer-inspired engineering built to optimise price performance for the widest range of web enterprise and hyper scale applications and feature state-of-the-art advancements in storage processing and memory technology coupled with industry-leading systems management capabilities. The new Dell PowerEdge portfolio begins with five form factors across blade, rack and tower servers provides customer with choices in how they address industry trends including cloud computing, mobility, big data and software defined. The first of the new Dell PowerEdge servers includes the PowerEdge R730xd, R730 and R630 rack servers, the M630 blade server and the T630 tower server which are built with the latest Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 processors. Combined with Dell’s end-to-end portfolio of enterprise infrastructure offerings, software and services, the new power edge servers enable increased levels of operational efficiency and flexibility at any scale for the most demanding applications and environments. According to the Future-ready IT survey report, 70% of IT decision makers (ITDMs) have been negatively impacted by performance issues when running applications requiring fast access to data. As businesses continue to run more data intensive applications such as real-time analytics and transactional process inglow-latency access to data becomes even more critical. Dells new PowerEdge servers are designed to leverage modern storage technologies that enable customers to accelerate applications by bringing data closer to the processor for increased application performance. With cost effective 1.8 inch SATA flash drives, the Dell power edge R630 can deliver to customers 2.4 times the input/output operations per second (IOPS) in the same amount of space as 2.5” SSDs With the power edge R730xd Dell also provides up to 100TB of storage of Microsoft exchange and delivers a 33% increase in the number of users over previous generations. The new in server storage technology allows customers to accelerate the most important data by offering high performance with NVMe Express Flash Storage and deployment of Dell Fluid Chache SAN and Dell Fluid Cache for DAS. It will also zone the large datasets by doubling RAID performance with optional dual PERC9 controllers and support software defined storage and optimised data placement by providing hybrid storage configurations within the compute node that enabled tiering capabilities. Dell also had introduced direct attached storage offerings specifically developed for the new PowerEdge servers. The new Dell storage MD1400 and MD1420 offer affordable storage expansion, double bandwidth and improved performance compared to the previous generation, data security with self-encrypting drives (SEDs) and seamless data management between the servers and storage enclosure. Administrators can also monitor and remediate data center situations from any hand held device anywhere in the world through the OpenManage system that has been developed by Dell. The new iDRAC QuickSync uses near field communication (NFC) an industry first, and enables customers to have a mobile workforce. Through these new levels of automation, administrators can save time and gain efficiency with zero touch management automation features, such as storing accessing and deploying a server configuration profile or firmware update from a central repository. Dells zero touch repository manager and auto updates reduce firmware updating time by 92%. Dell’s comprehensive portfolio of Connected Security Solutions now also comes equipped to combat persistent threats to data and IT assets with less cost and complexity. Dell South Asia General Manager (End User Computing) Harjeet Sigh Rekhi also introduced many of the latest end user computing products such as the new detachable and two in one laptops and tablets ideal personal use as well as for creating a mobile office environment.  The new Dell 8 inch tablet working off Windows 8.1 is soon to be launched in Sri Lanka. Speaking of the major decision that have been made by companies such as HP Samsung and Sony to consolidate their market he stated: “In the industry where a lot of brands are exiting and saying ‘we can’t compete’ we are committed to the PC business and believe that this is our future.” From humble beginnings in a dorm room at the university of Texas in 1984, Dell now powers 90% of the fortune 1000 companies in the world. In addition to this Intel Country Business Manager Indika De Zoysa also spoke of Intel’s contribution to Dell’s latest innovation by creating smaller and more efficient processors that increase the battery life while reducing the size of the machines itself. He said: “Units and designs are getting smaller and thinner. The new Intel processors are perfectly developed for twin and detachable computers. The battery life is long because power consumption of the processor is less.” Furthermore, OEM Lead, Southeast Asia New Markets Pubudu Basnayake also spoke of cloud technology that has been developed by Microsoft. This year the tour also visited countries such as Pakistan, Myanmar, Philippines, Nepal and Vietnam before arriving in Sri Lanka for the final event. Pix by Sameera Wijesinghe
