reach across multiple markets, HP hosted a media briefing at Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo last Wednesday.
General Manager for HP Enterprise Business in Asia Emerging Countries Vijay Balan in his opening presentation illustrated HP’s journey with their customers and how the consumer would benefit from the collaboration between HP Cloud and Big Data.
“The concept behind the Hewlett-Packard (HP) is to increase efficiency and decrease cost. As we face the next big shift we have evolved from mainframe in the 70s-80s Client/ Servers in 90s and then the biggest revolution came in 2000s with the Internet and 2010 beyond we have switched to mobile devices and social media to collect and deposit structured and unstructured data. Most of the product manufacturers and service providers at present are closely looking into social media forums to collect feedback from consumers; this is where Big Data and Cloud services come in to play.
“The next generation of humans will be born in to a society where mobile handheld devices are used to increase efficiency of their day to day activities. What amazes us is to witness their ability to multitask with the assistance of these products and services. In a company’s point of view it is becoming a crucial factor to provide their sales and marketing employees with mobile devices such as PC Tablets which increase their efficiency to independently operate and at the same time reduce the cost of investing on IT infrastructure.
“Along with this comes the challenge of providing a comprehensive solution where the necessary information can be securely stored and easily accessed at any given time. HP’s focus on weaving the concept of The Cloud and Big Data can provide enterprises with the needed tools and support,” Balan explained.
Elaborating on Balan’s presentation, WW Cloud and Big Data Consulting Vice President Tom Norton further reiterated that a new style of IT is emerging which is built on the previous foundations of IT; Legacy, Client/ Server, Web 2.0 to transform to; mobility, Cloud, social media and Big Data.
“As service providers we take into consideration the speed data is created and real time updates that take place on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook and content that are uploaded on YouTube. These sites tend to store both structured data; name, date of birth, gender, geo location and unstructured data (Big Data), photos, videos, shared content of each individual who use these platforms.
“All this data which was once considered personal is now stored in unsecured servers and these social media sites have a right to sell these data to any organisation or governing body as and when required,” Norton explained.
Wrapping up the media briefing HP Enterprise Group Sri Lanka and Maldives Country Manager Shiran Perera added insights on how fast Sri Lanka has embraced the smartphone culture and their usage of handheld devices. He said: “A recent survey on the usage of mobile phones reported that 50% of the mobile phone users have now switched to using smartphones this itself proves that the take up rate in these devices are very high in Sri Lanka. The latest devices have the capacity to retain and store more data. The impact of social media too plays a bigger role in the increased usage of technically advanced devices. Consumers use their smartphones to take pictures, make videos and update little information on the go using mobile applications.
“I can assure you that HP has the necessary infrastructure to drive this shift in the IT sector. The next term you will have to lookout for is ‘wearable devices’ as many of the PC Tablets will turnout a wearable size in the future”.
