ICT Industry Special Interest Groups

The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL - www.cssl.lk) is organising many events and activities to support special interests within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.

The CSSL has formed multiple Special Interest Groups for this purpose.

Special Interest Groups (SIG) are organised around different topics, areas or technologies within ICT to support the professionals in their career and professional development. SIGs will help to grow the special interest domains such as Software Development, IT Enabled Services, IT Research, Gov 2.0, Free and Open Source Software, Human Resources in ICT, Software Quality Assurance (QA) and Cloud Computing.

Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) Special Interest Group is based around FOSS technologies. Software Development SIG discusses on software development tools and methodologies. IT Enabled Services SIG discusses the use of ICT to provide other services such as Call Centre and Data Management leading into Business Process Outsourcing – BPO. IT Research SIG is the group for those who are interested in pursuing a research career in ICT. Gov 2.0 SIG is based around methodologies used in ICT for government services. Software QA discusses about testing and Quality Assurance in ICT projects. HR SIG discusses Human Resources related aspects in the ICT industry. Cloud computing is an emerging field in ICT. Cloud Computing SIG discusses the latest and greatest in Cloud Computing. The main objectives of SIGs are to discuss subject matter to enrich the industry.

The CSSL was established in 1976 in Sri Lanka for the purpose of promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and professionalism among those engaged in this field, and to maintain the highest professional standards among the ICT fraternity.

Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama, Executive Council Member of CSSL facilitates the SIG program.  Yasas said that CSSL has already had two successful events in March under the SIG project. One was the IT Enabled Services talk by Mr Pankaj Akhauri, COO- Timex BPO. The other was on “Storing and Processing Big Data with Open Source Tools” under the FOSS SIG. The presenter was Deependra Ariyadewa, who currently works at WSO2. Both events were extremely successful with a high level of participation. The CSSL President Mahesh Perera also attended the events.

The next SIG event is on 28th March (Wednesday) at 5.45pm. This event is a Software QA SIG event where testing processes under an agile development model will be discussed. The presenter Chinthaka Indikadahena is an experienced ICT Quality Assurance professional. Mr Indikadahena is currently the Senior Manager, Quality Assurance at Virtusa Corporation. The venue for the event is CSSL Office, 275/75, Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, Colombo.
