The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) announced Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) as the National Partner of National Information Technology Conference (NITC) 2014. Sri Lanka being the CHOGM host country and considering the relevance of the CHOGM 2013 theme ‘Growth Equity and Inclusive Development,’ CSSL and ICTA have taken steps to facilitate Commonwealth-wide deliberations at this year’s National Information Technology Conference with the conference theme ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’. The conference organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Telecommunication and IT, Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO) and the Ministry of External Affairs will be inaugurated on 25 August at the BMICH Main Conference Hall with the participation of telecommunication and ICT policymakers and technology leaders from Sri Lanka and other commonwealth member countries. A workshop on Critical Information Infrastructure protection (CIIP) is organised by the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation and it adds great value to NITC 2014 participants. ICTA Chairman and NITC 2014 Patron Prof. P.W. Epasinghe said: “ICTA is pleased to be associated with NITC 2014 as its National Partner. It is quite appropriate that NITC 2014 focuses on ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’.” Reminiscing on CHOGM 2013, the Professor stated: “The conference will go a long way in further ensuring that CHOGM 2013 deliberations are brought to their ultimate fulfilment.  Organised by CSSL when the Commonwealth-wide discussions of Sri Lanka-hosted CHOGM are deeply relevant, no better theme could have been chosen for this year’s NITC.” Referring to ICTA’s contribution to ‘ICT for Inclusive Development,’ the ICTA Chairman pointed out: “ICTA has championed the cause of ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’ over the past decade and positive results are now recognised both locally and internationally. ICT literacy, which was a prerogative of a few about 10 years ago, has now hit the 50% mark, thanks to this ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’ thrust. As the apex body for ICT for development, ICTA considers it a privilege to partner NITC 2014,” the ICTA Chairman added. “Under the theme ‘ICT for Inclusive Development,’ the NITC 2014 conference will create a platform for discussion on the innovative use of ICT to create better solutions under main tracks of Innovations for ICT4ID, Smart Societies, IT governance and security and big data, cloud and social media. CSSL and ICTA synergy has resulted in achieving our objective of attracting NITC 2014 a Commonwealth-wide participation and we have received many conference papers from the Commonwealth countries to facilitate a Commonwealth-wide deliberation,” said Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) President Ajith Salgado. By facilitating a dialogue among ICT professionals across the Commonwealth on the use of ‘ICT for Inclusive Development,’ the NITC 2014 will finalise a declaration on ‘ICT for Inclusive Development beyond MDGs: Policy Objectives and Targets for Vision 2020 in the Commonwealth’. The declaration and the recommendations are expected to be submitted to Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth and President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa for his consideration to be implemented in the commonwealth under his Chairmanship. The NITC involves key ICT decision makers in private and public sector together to share and discuss latest trends in Information and Communication Technology. These learning are usually adopted in their respective businesses or institutions for higher productivity, greater competitive advantage or customer centric service delivery. Registration details of NITC 2014 are available at the conference website www.nitc.lk. The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL), established in 1976, represents ICT professionals in the country. CSSL is a member of the South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC) and International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and is the proud organiser of NITC. The Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka functioning under the Presidential Secretariat and the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology, is the Government’s apex ICT institution. It was set up under the Information and Communication Technology Act No. 27 of 2003 and strengthened by the ICT Amendment Act No.33 of 2008. ICTA is required by the ICT Act to prepare strategies and programs on ICT to be implemented in the Government, private sector and in the civil society.
