In a glowing tribute to the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka  (ICTA) Professor Rohan Samarajiva says that that ICTA has been a caring friend in need to society. “ICTA has done much to make the dividends of ICT to the people in their day-to-day life. Whether it be in obtaining the vehicle revenue licence renewed or afresh while at home or knowing the police clearance certificate application status, ICTA has been behind it. ICTA’s role in ICT-based facility at these public services at normal times is perhaps better known. But few know the contribution ICTA continues to make in bringing about ICT-based solutions to people affected by disaster that throws people into precarious situations,” the professor said. The professor said so while addressing the participants of a week-long Indian Ocean Tsunami X (IOTX) convention gathered for a mid-week networking evening at Waters Edge on 19 June. Following a two-day Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Implementation Workshop in Negombo, the CAP codefest in Orion City IT Park and Disaster Risk Reduction lecture in Colombo the networking was great. Speaking further on the occasion the professor recapitulated the role played by the Sahana program, CAP and the Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM). Founder chairman of the Learning Initiatives on Reforms for Network Economies Asia (LIRNEasia), Professor Rohan Samarajiva thanked all participants for gracing the occasion, some travelling from great distances. Participating in this occasion ICTA CEO Reshan Dewapura thanked LIRNEasia on behalf of the Government and ICTA for involving ICTA in all its major activities and in IOTX. The endeavours of LIRNEasia will go a long way in people being better prepared to face disasters when they occur and better deal with them when they have occurred, Dewapura pointed out.
