ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) was strategic partner to the ‘INFO-V 2014’ ICT Exhibition – Technology Presenter held at Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo recently. A headcount of about 6,000 visited the ICTA stall on ICT set up run at the above on 21 and 22 March. ICTA also organised the ICT Conference in coincidence with the above on 21 March. ICTA and Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SL CERT), a subsidiary of ICTA, conducted ICT workshops for students during the exhibition. These interactive sessions were respectively particularly on ‘Future Careers in the world of IT-BPM’ and cyber security. Participating in this event, ICTA Re-engineering Government Program Director Wasantha Deshapriya said: “A survey has revealed that the closest and most trusted friend of the current (Y) generation is the internet. Parents are friends of this generation after the internet. Services like Rates payments, obtaining of vehicle revenue licenses are available today online. But the usage of these services lies at a low level. The reason for this may be that the recipients of these services belong to the older age group. But today’s young generation is different from this. They wish to procure everything ranging from their clothes and apparels online. While people of our generation do jobs within Sri Lanka, the younger generation are engaged in top jobs online the world over. Because of this the public sector including the schools should now study how services should be provided to the young (Y) generation. The public sector should initiate such services accordingly. The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), in particular, has been doing a yeomen service in raising the standard of ICT facilities. The public are now enjoying the benefits of these endeavours. “It has become necessary that new thinking goes into methodologies of providing services. When persons born after 1980 who are considered the Y generation are integrated into the society as citizens, services should be provided to them in a manner relevant to them. Because of this many countries have studied the way the Y generation wishes to obtain public service.”
