Geraldine Hashani Fernando from the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) recently bagged the Silver Award under the Tertiary Category of the National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) for her project known as the DroidCard. This is the fifth year a team of IIT students have bagged an award at NBQSA. This state-of-the-art product was conceptualized with the aim of mitigating crimes, risks and issues related to physical bank cards and were based on the concept of having virtual bank cards on mobile phones, which can be communicated with ATMs via a secured NFC channel. This system also enables remote access during the theft of a mobilephone and consists of decision making and data analysis features for added security. The nominations for the NBQSA awards are carefully evaluated by a panel of judges comprising of highly acclaimed individuals from various professional bodies and industry associations. Hashani and her team had to compete for this award with the elite of software engineering students from several state universities and private higher education institutes. The ever-increasing participation of students has also resulted in a stringent judging process by an expert panel of judges. Hashani, speaking of her recent achievement said that she and her team, which comprised of Hasitha Shan who was in-charge of information security and Gayanthi De Silva as the business person, were delighted to receive this prestigious award and considered it a great achievement to be recognised and selected from a large number of applicants who participated in this competition. “We had to make several rounds of changes and tests to perfect the DroidCard solution. Our project was reviewed by the judges as a feasible product with high business viability. All our hard work paid off and we finally emerged as the Silver Award winners of this year’s NBQSA. This is just the beginning. We will have more innovative projects that we are currently working on,” she said. Subsequent to completion of her studies at Holy Family Convent Colombo 4, she joined IIT that came highly recommended to her by both former students as well as industry personnel. Hashani has recently completed her degree in BEng (Hons) Software Engineering with a First class and currently works as a Software Engineer for IFS. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank IIT for the encouragement and invaluable guidance. Without the encouragement and guidance of my lecturers at IIT, this achievement certainly wouldn’t have been possible. IIT has been a pillar of strength and I recommend students who aspire to become visionaries and innovators to join IIT,” she said. She also said that the third year industry placement of the four year degree program she followed at IIT is a unique feature of the institute. She said that the industry placement also gave her an edge over other competitors as she already had exposure to the real world of work and had a good idea on how to design a product that would prove to be valuable to the industry. Hashani hopes to complete her MSc in Advanced Software Engineering at IIT which she believes will further enhance her chances for career success. The National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) 2014 was organised by the British Computer Society Sri Lanka for the 16th consecutive year and was held at the Galadari Hotel in October. NBQSA is the only national competition in Sri Lanka that recognises and honours exceptional local ICT achievements and significant technological advancements in the country.
