Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition 2011 finals to take centre sta

Sri Lanka Association of Software of Services Companies ( SLASSCOM ) and Motorola Solutions will organise the Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition finals on 6 October 2011.

The finals will be held at Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Auditorium of University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) with the participation of Chief Guest Minister of Information Technology and Telecom Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and Patricia A. Butenis, US Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives as the Guest of Honour for the opening ceremony.

A total of 16 undergraduate teams from 12 universities and University affiliation colleges of Sri Lanka consisting Universities of Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Kelaniya, Jaffna, Colombo, Uva Wellassa, Rajarata, OUSL, NIBM, APIIT, SLIIT and IIT will demonstrate the Enterprise level Mobile Applications developed during last five months.

The 16 shortlisted solutions were selected out of the 49 initial entries by a panel of experts. All applications address the needs of different industry verticals such as healthcare, plantation, tourism, retail, warehouse management, transportation and public organizations such as railways, postal, energy and utilities.

Motorola Solutions Director and Country Manager for Sri Lanka Anuradha Tennakoon commenting about the initiative said: “It is evident by these applications that our undergraduates are capable of developing world class solutions with proper guidance and coaching. These young people are the future of our IT industry and they will drive Sri Lanka to a very strong position of world’s IT landscape”.

The day’s event comprising student stalls and live demo areas will lead up to the awards ceremony with the participation of Dr. Sunil J. Navaratne, Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education and Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe, Chairman, Bank of Ceylon.

SLASSCOM Chairman Sujiva Devaraja stated, “SLASSCOM is delighted to be associated with Motorola Solutions in this important annual event which not only enhances the IT skills of undergrads but prepares them to become IT entrepreneurs in future. These dual goals are key objectives of SLASSCOM’s capacity and entrepreneurship forum. Events such as these serve to sharpen the innovative skills of Sri Lanka’s IT talent which has already acquired international recognition in this respect. Mobile Technologies is a niche which is very much the focus of SLASSCOM’s Mobile and Telco Centre of Excellence, which seeks to showcase Sri Lanka’s capability in this rapidly advancing domain.”

As per industry sources Mobility represents an important element for today’s organizations across the world. Mobility is being considered as a vital component for infrastructure and software applications across the enterprise markets. Ease-of-use applications for mobile computing devices and technological advances in wireless software platforms and applications will stimulate global mobile computing market to reach $328.03 billion by 2015.

Today, a growing number of industries are installing enterprise mobility solutions for enhancing employee productivity, improving customer satisfaction and ultimately for developing the business. One of the prominent trends impacting the prospects of enterprise mobility is the increasing mobile worker population across the world.

Emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and other regions, and increasing demand for unified communications are expected to steer the market for enterprise mobility in the near future. Huge opportunities lie ahead to bring various types of mobile technologies to the global workforce. Underserved mobile workers across the geographies would benefit from the flexibility and the reach provided by mobile solutions.
