Key groups further benefit from Airtel roaming rates

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, has announced a further reduction of rates when roaming in India,

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, hot on the heels of Airtel slashing roaming rates to over 100 countries recently.

Under the new offer, local customers travelling to either India or Bangladesh will be billed for incoming calls at only Rs. 2 while outgoing calls made to either India or Bangladesh (while roaming within the two respective countries) will also cost just Rs. 2. Outgoing calls to Sri Lanka will cost Rs. 18 per minute while SMS to any country costs a mere Rs. 7.

“Leveraging on our global efficiencies of scale, Airtel Lanka is now in the unique position to offer Sri Lanka’s outbound travellers the lowest roaming rates provided by any local telecommunication operator in Sri Lanka. Roaming calls to India and Bangladesh have been further slashed thus making the region the most affordable for roaming,” Bharti Airtel Sri Lanka CEO Suren Goonewardene said.

Earlier this month, Airtel Lanka slashed roaming rates to the Middle Eastern countries as well as the Maldives, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, France, UK, Italy, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and Thailand among many other countries thus passing on the benefit to customers who travelled out of Sri Lanka.  This move has brought about significant benefits to Sri Lankan customers who travel frequently to these countries for business and holiday purposes. It has also been a great boon for Sri Lankan students who travel overseas and live in these countries – resulting in a ‘one number’ cost effective method for them to stay in touch with their loved ones within their residing countries and back at home.
