Mobitel hosts ‘Google I/O Extended Sri Lanka 2014’

The national mobile service provider, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel yesterday hosted Google I/O Extended conference in Sri Lanka for the second consecutive year with a registered participation of over 3000 Google enthusiasts, making it the largest ICT confab ever held in the country. Mobitel partnered with Google Sri Lanka and the Google Developer Group (GDG) to host a successful event filled with fun and excitement. The conference included four streaming sessions aired live from the main event held in San Francisco-USA, along with interactive sessions by local speakers and an intensely competitive hackathon which ran in parallel where developers were offered an opportunity to showcase their developing talents. Mobitel hosted the first ever Google I/O Extended Sri Lanka last year with the participation of over 1000 Googlers with resounding success, while this year, Mobitel broke its own record with an overwhelming participation that comprised an audience of Developers, ICT Professionals, Industry leaders, University students and young tech-savvy innovators. Google I/O is an annual developer-focused conference held by Google in San Francisco –USA, featuring a wide range of Google related technologies, including information on new products and important upgrades to existing products. Since the participation for the main event in USA is strictly limited, I/O events have been extended to other geographies across the globe for the benefit of developers from other countries. The Google I/O Extended Sri Lanka 2014 was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute from 7pm (25th June) till 6am (26th June). Google I/O featured highly technical, in-depth sessions focused on building web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google and open web technologies such as Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit, and App Engine. As technology evolves, new and exciting possibilities are created; the development of infrastructure is both the inspiration and the catalyst for the country’s advancement. Mobitel in its vision to lead Sri Lanka towards an info-com and knowledge-rich society through its service offerings has reached yet another step by partnering the global giant Google.
