Mobitel Sri Lanka this week unveiled its new Internet of Things (IoT) concept X Station, where customers and potential customers can experience everyday IoT applications firsthand.
In a press release announcing the launch, Mobitel said X Station is the “expert hub for futuristic technology products and services that will enhance and simplify lives while enabling visitors to experience the tech revolution.”
X Station houses, among other things, a virtual reality (VR) zone rigged with a Sony Playstation 4 gaming console paired with a VR headset. X Station also has an area dedicated to showcasing Smart Home applications that utlise Google Assistant and other IoT applications such as remote light bulb operation from Orange Electric.
The Smart Health corner showcases devices that can be used to monitor one’s health from the convenience of their own home – devices that talk to each other thanks to IoT. X Station also features a 3D printing zone that demonstrates exactly how 3D printing works.
Mobitel said that the launch of X Vision “strengthens its vision to be the ICT leader in the country and provides Sri Lankan citizens with the chance to experience and use devices to enhance and simplify their day-to-day lives.” Explaining what a telecommunications company has got to do with 3D, virtual reality or office automation, Mobitel Senior General Manager, Marketing, Isuru Dissanayake, said that the idea behind X Station is to showcase Mobitel’s readiness to evolve with rapidly changing technology.
“ At Mobitel we believe the world is going to be interconnected, with machines talking to each other, people talking to each other, and people and machines talking to each other. Mobitel wishes to play a key role in this global ecosystem,” he said.
“We believe we have the right network, the right people and the right resources to take Sri Lanka to the next era of digital communication. All of these machines are connected to the internet. Mobitel is ready,” he added.
Touching on the name behind the initiative, Dissanayake said X Station was chosen instead of the typical ‘Mobitel branch’ nomenclature as it represents something larger.
“To us, X Station is the evolution of technology. What we want to showcase here is that technology and Mobitel is evolving with that technology,” he said. X Station is located at No. 409, R.A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 3.
