Palo Alto, CA: WSO2 announced that Two Degrees Mobile Limited (2degrees) is using products from the WSO2 Carbon open source middleware platform to deliver innovative services to its mobile customers.

The WSO2-enabled services have allowed New Zealand’s newest mobile provider to attract customers from established mobile communications companies.

Today, just three years after it was founded, 2degrees serves some 800,000 subscribers — roughly one-sixth of New Zealand’s entire population.

“We’ve grown our customers much faster than we could have ever predicted, and that has required us to significantly accelerate the rollout of new services and the technology to support them,” says 2degrees Software Development Manager Neeraj Satija.

“With WSO2 Carbon, we’ve found a strong middleware platform that is enabling us to deliver the innovation, high volume and high performance required to be a mobile market leader.”

Case study highlights design approaches to WSO2-Enabled Mobile Services

A new 2degrees case study from WSO2 describes how the mobile company has used WSO2 Carbon middleware to deliver transparent, intuitive customer services, such as telephone plan and data plan activation, account top-up, and account status.

In first launching the business, 2degrees implemented the WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB) to mediate and orchestrate both internal and customer-facing Web services within its service-oriented architecture (SOA). Using the WSO2 ESB, 2degrees was able to develop and deliver its innovative mobile services in about 18 months. Mobile users immediately recognised the value of those WSO2 ESB-enabled services, and within months of the launch, 2degrees began exceeding its goals for acquiring subscribers.

Since then, 2degrees has added three other WSO2 Carbon products. The WSO2 Data Services Server is allowing the company to respond rapidly to the competition and share information with customers via data services.

The WSO2 Business Activity Monitor is being used to fine-tune integration of its WSO2 ESBs, as well as support alerts and more detailed analysis. The recently added WSO2 Business Process Server is being implemented to support Web services requiring more advanced levels of orchestration.

“With more than three decades of telecom industry experience, the 2degrees management team understands the role of innovative services in building a loyal customer base and driving market leadership,” said WSO2 Founder and CEO Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana.

“We are excited by 2degrees’ success in using our WSO2 Carbon middleware products to deliver the groundbreaking Web services that have powered its rapid rise, from start-up to one of New Zealand’s top mobile providers.”
