SLIIT returns for the fourth consecutive year with the exciting robotic competition RoboFest 2013. The competition, to be held on 12 and 13 September 2013 at SLIIT’s Malabe campus, will see an even larger line-up of competitors battling it out for the title. The event, hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SLIIT, will give students from around the country an opportunity to showcase their robot design talents during a two day event designed to lay the groundwork for building team-work and communication skills among participants. The competition is open to school students and undergraduates island-wide and participants may compete under their respective categories individually or as a team which may have up to five members. School level competitors are required to build a mobile robot that can perform a task according to the given criteria. The contest will consist of a preliminary competition, in which 10 finalists will be selected, and the final round, in which Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded, along with cash prizes of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively. Three additional contestants will be awarded prizes of Rs. 5,000 each. The University Competition is open to students of any university or any university-level degree awarding institute. Individuals or teams will be required to design and build a robot that is capable of navigating through an obstacle course along a designated path. The contest will consist of a preliminary competition, in which 10 finalists will be selected, and move on to the final round, in which Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded. The first prize winner will be awarded Rs. 65,000, second prize Rs. 40,000 and third prize Rs. 20,000. There will also be an open competition which will serve as a platform for industrial participants to showcase how they utilise robotics in their industries to automate and enhance production. Winners of this category will be awarded valuable certificates. “We keenly look forward to this year’s competition as there will be more competitors and more sophisticated entries than ever before,” enthused Professor SLIIT Chairman S. Karunaratne. “It is important to provide opportunities for students to engage with new technologies and familiarise themselves in the field of robotics, as automated machines have become a vital force in today’s industries,” noted SLIIT President and CEO Professor Lalith Gamage.
