Business Chat, third in the series presented by the Postgraduate Institute of Management Alumni (PIMA) on 22 November had Keith Modder, Executive Vice President and COO of Virtusa Corp., discussing the topic ‘Social Media, Business and Employees’. The session was moderated by Imran Vikassim, Director Enterprise Business of Microsoft Sri Lanka.
The evening proved to be a stimulating and informal gathering in which the role of social media and the effect it has on business was the main theme. The President of PIMA Dilini Wijeweera kicked off the event with a welcome speech that informed the audience about the objective of this forum; to learn and share knowledge
She also brought in examples of how social media has brought about rapid and immense changes especially in countries such as Tunisia and Egypt. Her address was followed by Professor Uditha Liyanage, Patron of PIM. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Liyanage highlighted the importance of organising forums of this nature where either a ‘topical point’ or ‘counter point’ is made. Modder delivered his speech on social media and stated that social media has been instrumental in engaging the Gen Y, which makes a significant proportion of the workforce.
He also added that the integration of social media depends on the company and that one should pace oneself accordingly since it is a completely new platform.
Modder also highlighted how Virtusa is currently taking the social media experience to another level by implementing their own networks which makes the company more efficient while continuing to maintain privacy aspects.
The speech was followed by a Q&A in which the audience was able to gain insights in to how Virtusa has successfully integrated social media to the daily work life.
