Workshop on cyber crime and cyber security

The Shippers’ Academy Colombo (SAC) and the International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka (ICCSL) in association with Ernest and Young (E & Y Sri Lanka & India) have jointly organised a workshop on cyber crime/security to build capacity of the Sri Lankan industry and government to mitigate the threat.

The workshop is themed ‘Create capacity to challenge cyber crime’. The organisers have invited a specialist from India along with CERT Sri Lanka to make presentations and to educate the industry on potential threats to numerous e-applications used in day to day business of companies and government institutions.

It has been identified that computer crime is an increasing phenomenon in Sri Lanka, affecting many across the society, be it an individual or a company.  In the recent months and weeks many websites have been hacked, defamatory material has been published.

At global level the subject has attracted leaders of nations including the United States to look at this new 21st century threat on information technology.

The workshop will be held at the Sri Lanka Foundation on Friday 22 March from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. it will cover the following topics:

1. What is the international position  on cyber crime, hacking of websites

2. Existing laws and available security tools against cyber crime

3. How to report

4. What action can the victims take?

5. Govt. responsibility

6. Educating society and companies about responsibility

7. Case studies

Key resource person Ponkumar Venkatesh is an Associate Director with the Risk Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young, India and manages Ernst & Young’s Advanced Security Centre in Chennai. He holds a Bachelors degree in Technology (Electronics & Communications) and a Masters degree in management. He has served as visiting faculty for the post graduate program in cyber forensics in Anna University and has authored articles and has undertaken speaking engagements on application security assessments.
