Cloud computing is increasingly gaining popularity as the preferred platform for developing and hosting applications. WSO2 will host the first coding social of its kind, WSO2 Hackthon 2014, to help programming enthusiasts develop their skills in creating and implementing their own brand of open source software in a cloud based environment. The hackathon taking place from 26-28, September at the WSO2 Colombo office premises at Palm Grove, Colombo 3, will be a 48-hour non-stop event which also includes a great line up of entertainment, surprise guest appearances, sports activities and competitions. Participants are encouraged to come up with their own ideas, concepts and scope of projects that are focused on building Platform as a Service (PaaS) frameworks and Software as a Service (SaaS) applications. WSO2 will offer in-house expertise to guide projects along and upon successful completion of a working prototype and participants will receive a certificate of completion. “We are excited to be hosting such an event that will not only provide an experience of a lifetime but will also foster greater use of open source technologies that can help companies gain competitive advantages,” said WSO2 founder and CEO Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana. “We are building on our commitment of encouraging greater innovation in the local IT industry – all through open source technologies that are more accessible and cost effective.” The hackathon is now opened for registrations, targeting developers specialising in cloud computing. 20 teams of five will be selected to participate.
