Hilton Colombo joined the 3,800 hotels that are part of the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of brands and more than one billion people worldwide on 31 March 2012 from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. to commemorate Earth Hour 2012.

The Hilton Colombo team dedicated 60 minutes to stand united with people from across the globe to protect the environment by switching off all non-essential electrical appliances and raising awareness of the cause among employees and guests. The event commenced with candles lit in the shape of the Earth Hour 60 + sign along with fresh organic cupcakes which illuminated the lobby.

Special candlelit dinners were organised at the Hilton Colombo’s outlets: Spices, Spoons and the Thorana Lounge with most of the ingredients organically grown and sourced locally. Following on, guests serenaded the night away at the Earth Hour Jazz night at the hotel’s exquisite Thorana Lounge.

The hotel also observed Earth Hour by switching off laundry machines, boilers, swimming pool pumps, the pond, the tennis court lights, concessionaire shop lights, and building lights. Moreover the hotel shut down one elevator with the back corridor lights reduced by 50 per cent while all the floor corridors were kept on emergency lighting for one hour. The well-known Hilton neon logo was also switched off as a symbolic gesture to further demonstrate the hotel’s support to Earth Hour.

Following Earth Hour, Hilton Colombo looks onward to a new tree planting initiative keeping in line with the symbolic gesture of going beyond the hour.
