The Consulate General of India celebrated the 70th anniversary of India’s Republic Day Sunday morning (26 January) with Consul General Balachandran and Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya paying respects at the IPKF Memorial in Palaly by laying a wreath.
Following this, the Consul General hoisted the Indian flag at a function at the Consulate and read out the message of the President of India. Over 100 people, including the Consulate officials and their family members, Indian citizens, persons of Indian origin, friends of India and media participated in the function.
The Consulate also organised a cultural program marking the 70th anniversary of the Republic Day at Tilko Hotel with a Veena recital by Yoga Vandana Jammalamadaka and group, a Kathak performance by Jayashree Acharya and group followed by a ‘Veerapandiya Kaddappomman’ Kooththu by artistes from Pasaiyur St. Anthony Cultural Group. Over 500 invited guests including the Northern Province Governor, Members of Parliament, Chairman of the Northern Provincial Council, Jaffna Mayor, Election Commission Member, officers of the Tri Services and Police Forces, senior Government officials, former NPC Ministers and members, political and religious leaders, competent authority and professors of the University of Jaffna, Diplomatic Corps, Indian citizens, Persons of Indian Origin, Consulate officials and their families and media participated in the function.
