Sri Lanka’s premier female choral ensemble, Soul Sounds marks their significant milestone of two decades of success.
During a media interaction the esteemed Soundarie David Rodrigo, the group’s director and founder, along with choir leaders Kumarini Rajakaruna, Roshnie De Bond, and Dona Ruwini, shared their journey of musical excellence.
Soundarie Rodrigo, reflecting on her journey, recounted the pivotal moments and the individuals who were instrumental in the ensemble’s growth since its inception. Her story began in 1997 at her alma mater, Holy Family Convent, where she mentored the Senior Choir. Recognising their potential, she led them to compete internationally, that signalled the beginning of Soul Sounds. Their first major success came in 2004, securing the first runners-up position in the Youth Choir category at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales.
Soul Sounds’ journey of success continued, winning accolades at the World Choir Games and touring globally, performing in countries like India, China, Australia, Kuwait, Austria, France, the United States, Malaysia, and South Africa. Their repertoire spans classical, gospel, contemporary, and folk genres, showcasing their versatility and adaptability.
Looking ahead to 2024, Soul Sounds plans special concerts and participation in the World Choir Games. Their journey has been a celebration of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence, under the leadership of Soundarie David Rodrigo and Artistic Director Jerome L De Silva.
To celebrate the two decades of success, Soul Sounds will hold “Moods of Christmas” concert on 22 December at the Cinnamon Grand. Conceptualised by Yasmin Cader, it promises to be a blend of their traditional repertoire and new interpretations. Their commitment to music and the community is evident in their involvement in various charities and events, where they continue to inspire and spread joy through their performances as an embodiment of the spirit and talent of Sri Lanka, leaving an indelible mark on the world stage.
