Sri Lanka has been ranked eighth in the world in a study on the places where Valentine’s Day, which falls today, is most popular.
With a Popularity Score of 62, Sri Lanka’s ranking was described as follows: “The home of the love cake is one that loves to throw a big party for the holiday of love. We were not the first to think of this funny association as the Sri Lankan Government launched a marketing campaign to promote the love cake and Sri Lankan cuisine during last year’s Valentine’s Day.”
The study was done by Chef’s Pencil (https://chefspencil.com) which styles itself as the ultimate ‘online cookbook’. Chef’s Pencil was started by Sydney-based Chef Paul Hegeman.
It used Google Trends a reliable source of big data to analyse the search interest level for Valentine’s Day across the world. The Valentine’s Day search category comprises all terms related to Valentine’s Day such as Valentine’s Day gifts for him, Valentine’s dinner ideas, dia dos namorados, or Valentine’s Day images or other searches – made in any language. A score is then assigned to each location that shows the interest level for the given category. Chef’s Pencil said in its post (https://chefspencil.com/where-valentines-day-is-most-popular-around-the-world/) every year on 14 February St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated by tens of millions worldwide. Saint Valentine’s Day is all about love and it’s celebrated through gift giving, romantic dinners, or just spending quality time with your loved one(s).
“Many believe that Valentine’s Day is a big thing only in America so we turned to Google Trends, a reliable source of big data, to find out if this is actually true,” said Chef’s Pencil.
According to Google Trends data, Valentine’s Day is most popular not in America or the Western world but in the Arab countries, Asia and Latin America.
