In the few short years since the end of the nation’s civil conflict, Sri Lanka has been spreading her creative wings to newer heights. Myriad art forms are merging to create holistic pieces that combine performance with installation art, multimedia, graphic design, fashion and music to show a nation how the coming together of different elements can lead to a greater end.
This new direction that the arts and the nation are heading toward is one worth celebrating and LASALLE trained Sri Lankan dancer, choreographer and educator Yoshita Abayasekara-Jacobson is about to make it happen. She will be presenting Sri Lanka’s premier international performing arts festival – ‘A New Direction,’ bringing together a lot more than just the performing arts.
The festival will have a two-pronged approach, offering a series of performances in Colombo alongside an outreach program in the form of two workshops.
The performances in Colombo titled ‘Frames’ and ‘Through the Barricades’ are scheduled for 21 December at Bishop’s College Auditorium featuring world-class International and Sri Lankan performers.
Dance, music, theatre and film workshops will also be conducted by the artistes on 19 and 20 December.
The first workshop for children and young adults from Colombo will be a ticketed event.
The second workshop, in partnership with the Sevalanka Foundation and in collaboration with Abhina Academy of Performing Arts and headed by Anoja Weerasinghe, will focus on the performing arts as a means for rehabilitation and regeneration for a selected group of children from the north.
