The American Center Colombo will host a presentation featuring the editorial cartoonist of ‘The Economist’ Kevin Kallaugher on Thursday, October 18, at the US-SL Fulbright Commission located at 55, Abdul Caffoor Mawatha, Colombo 3.

Kevin Kallaugher (Kal) is the editorial cartoonist for ‘The Economist,’ the highly prestigious international news magazine. The magazine recruited Kal as its first ever resident cartoonist in 1978. Kal has also worked in publications such as ‘The Observer,’ ‘The Sunday Telegraph,’ ‘Today’ and ‘The Mail on Sunday’ in London and returned to the US in 1988 and joined ‘The Baltimore Sun’ as its editorial cartoonist and continued to draw for ‘The Economist.’

Kal’s work for ‘The Sun’ and ‘The Economist’ has appeared in more than 100 publications worldwide. Kal has won many awards for his work including the 2005 Nast Prize as presented by the town of Landau, Germany, the 2004 ‘Gillray Goblet’ for the cartoon of the year as presented by the Political Cartoon Society of Great Britain and many more.

He also has many publications of cartoons to his credit. In 1999, ‘The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons’ said of Kal, “Commanding a masterful style, Kallaugher stands among the premier caricaturists of the (twentieth) century.”

In 2006, Kal was named Artist-in-Residence at the Imagine Research Center at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. With the IRC, Kal explored the development of 3D digital caricatures that can be animated in real-time. His first character, The Digital Dubya, made its world premiere at a live press conference at the Walters Art Museum in June 2006.
