Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo and Cinnamon red invites patrons to join the celebrations on 14 April for a memorable New Year, complete with the season’s best festive feasts, rituals and games.
Cinnamon Grand Colombo
Premier five-star city hotel, Cinnamon Grand is continuing its tradition of hosting a typical Sri Lankan ‘Avurudu’ celebration at Nuga Gama, the village in the city. The hamlet, epitomising the true essence of a rural locale is an ideal place to celebrate Sri Lankan traditions with family and friends.
The village headman Liyanage and Nuga Gama’s ammés will follow the auspicious rituals starting from 1:47 p.m. with the lighting of the oil lamp. Patrons can partake in a traditional Avurudu feast with milk rice and Sri Lankan sweetmeats, while enjoying an extensive line up of games and activities under the canopy of the 200-year old Banyan tree. Chef Sujith will also prepare a host of Avurudu dishes that are based on ancient recipes.
Seasonal games such as rabangaseema (Sri Lankan drumming), panchadameema, kana mutti, andayatakirikaweema, buniskaemaa, sack race and lime and spoon will be part of the attractions this Avurudu.
Guests can also enjoy a special Sri Lankan tea buffet priced at Rs. 550 (nett) which will consist of both Sinhala and Tamil Avurudu fare.

The five-star urban resort, Cinnamon Lakeside will offer two varieties of Avurudu hampers at Goodies, for Rs. 2,500 (nett) and Rs. 3,000 (nett). Hamper options include traditional sweetmeats such as Konda Kavum, Athiraha, Mung Athiraha, Asmi, Kalu Dodol, Thalaguli and Kokis. Hampers are available from 10 to 14 April.
The hotel will also lay out a festive table at their lobby for in-house guests and follow the auspicious timings associated with the day to recreate the festive feel. At the lobby, the management and in-house guests will light a hearth and boil milk, calling for prosperity in the New Year, followed by enjoying a traditional meal. Traditional drummers will mark the auspicious timings.

The trendy lean luxury property, Cinnamon red will keep to its contemporary theme, and present a unique Avurudu dinner at their level eight restaurant, Flavoured. Special dishes influenced by local dishes and flavours will be part of the buffet, which is priced at Rs. 1,700 (plus tax). Curry flavoured chicken salad, mixed herbal salad, mutton barley broth, goat meat biriyani, crab and drumstick leave curry, jack seed and thibbatu curry, polosachcharu, pork Kessler and a special Sri Lankan dessert corner are just some of the enticing items on the extensive buffet.
In-house guests will be extended an invitation to join the celebration at the auspicious time at the hotel’s lobby level, at Stirred followed by the tradition of serving sweetmeats.
