Red, white and green – the colors of Santa Claus – were the colours of the evening. Over 200 students learning German enjoyed the fun-filled party last week. The event was organised by the Goethe Institute, the German language and cultural centre, in collaboration with the German Embassy.

Students from the German language division at the University of Kelaniya and two of the German Partner schools, Royal College, Colombo and Musaeus College, Colombo also participated at the event. The program kicked off with a welcome surprise called “Kakao” a typical German drink and continued with students performing dramas and singing Christmas carols.

There were several activities such as a Christmas quiz, a competition to select the best Santa Claus and a talent show. These gave participants a chance to win exiting prices. In between, the certificates were handed over to the students who sat for the German exams with generous surprises for the best students.

The program was rounded up with a Barbeque and dance party. “It is great, we are just having fun”, “The Music is super, I cannot stop dancing”, “I learned lot about German traditions for X-mas” were just some of the few positive comments of the students. The German Cultural Institute located on 39, Gregorys Road, Colombo 7 is the international market leader for teaching German with a history of more than 50 years in Sri Lanka.

Since 2008 the Initiative Schools: Partners for the future (PASCH) was launched by the German Foreign Ministry to create opportunities for young people to learn about modern-day Germany and the German language. Germany with its strong and stable economy plays a pioneering role in many global issues such as protecting human rights and climate related concerns.
