In a symbolic gesture to create awareness about the need to take action on climate change, Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo dimmed the lights in public areas of the hotel by 50% and increased the setting on its air conditioners by 3 degrees during Earth Hour.  This resulted in a positive impact of a 20% reduction on electricity usage.

Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo commemorated the internationally celebrated Earth Hour with a theme ‘Earth Hour Every Hour’ encouraging the community to take continuous action for a greener planet.

The hotel is a forerunner in sustainable practices and was the first Colombo hotel to be Green Globe certified.  It now has the longest running certification in Sri Lanka as the only hotel in the country to be certified for three consecutive years.

Continuing its close relationship with the local community, the hotel invited students from a nearby school it assists, T.B. Jaya Maha Vidyalaya, to convey the message through dance.  During Earth Hour when the hotel’s lights were dimmed, the students entered the Lounge and Terrace with candles in hand and performed a specially choreographed dance act.

The children were presented with a reusable ‘Earth Hour’ branded bag and were advised to use it in place of plastic bags.  The bags were made by the hotel’s team of tailors using excess fabric that was in stock.  In addition to gifts of appreciation, the hotel’s ‘Green Team’ included information on simple measures that can be taken by the students on a regular basis on reducing the environmental impact of their households.

The hotel continues to encourage guests, diners, employees, families of employees, and the general community to take positive action towards the environment through a host of initiatives including messages to guests in rooms, awareness programs by the hotel’s training team and advice dispensed through the hotel’s Facebook page, www.facebook.lk/cinnamonlakeside.
