Since its inception in 2007, Earth Hour has been able to increase the engagement and involvement of people from different countries and cities to support what has become the largest environmental event of history.

Earth Hour which is scheduled on the last Saturday of March each year is conducted coinciding with the equinox to ensure that most cities are in darkness as it rolled out around the world. The concept of ‘Earth Hour’ sends out a compelling message to the world, emphasising the impact of climate change and the need for a global initiative to ensure the sustainability of our planet.

All Sri Lankan resorts in the group joined hands on Saturday 23 March 2013 and dimmed and switched off lights and lit candles from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the restaurants, bars and other public areas. It was noted that guests too had expressed their appreciation for the effort taken by the hotel and willingly participated in this global event that is conducted to build awareness on climate change.

“Protecting our planet earth should not be a phenomenon that happens on an annual basis, rather it should be the unanimous echo of all its citizens, to make practical steps to minimise the activities that causes climate change,” said Jayantissa Kehelpannala, Sector Head of Sri Lankan Resorts.
