Earth Hour at Taj Samudra, Colombo

This year as in years before, Taj Samudra turned off the lights too, when hundreds of millions of people spanning the length and breadth of the globe joined hands with Earth Hour to take a positive action toward protecting our environment.

At Taj Samudra, it’s not just about the hour – it goes well beyond. The hotel is silver certified with the global greening organisation ‘EarthCheck’ that specialises in environmental management for the tourism industry. In line with this certification, the Taj Samudra responds directly to major environmental problems faced by the planet today. Prevention of pollution, efficient utilization of resources, effective waste management and the promotion of environmental awareness are a linking thread that runs through the entire fabric of operations at the hotel.

The Taj Samudra team together with her guests switched off lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday 23 March. Understanding that awareness and engagement work hand in hand, guests were invited to light candles and the tone was set to share personal efforts concerning the environment.

Over refreshments that followed, unfolded deeply moving stories from heads of multinational corporations who hold a profound sense of responsibility in ensuring all suppliers in the chain are green certified to mothers educating young children about how the food they eat and water they drink affects planet earth. It was truly a heart-warming time spent shedding light in just an hour of darkness.
