More than 200 beauticians from Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu participated in the first ever northern bridal show in Vavuniya on 29 November 2014. The show was supported under an initiative, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Nucleus Foundation that develops micro-enterprises.
The show included a bridal display comprising Hindu, Kandyan and Christian brides. The northern beauticians and their models were trained by a well-known personality in the sector, Dr. Priya Shanker who also choreographed the event. She was at the event lending her expertise to the beauticians and their models and also conducting demonstrations. This is the first time beauticians from the north got an opportunity to showcase their talents. Like flowers blooming because of the sunlight we have been able to bloom because of your support said a beautician from Kilinochchi who had dressed up a bride to walk the ramp.
Entrepreneurs in the beauty sector got an opportunity to meet and develop business linkages with suppliers from Colombo and other regions. Potential trainers were also identified for future training providers and beauticians not yet members of the Nucleus network expressed their desire to join the groups and benefit from the many activities for developing the sector in the next days.
