As Hindus around the world celebrate Thai Pongal this Friday (15 January), Cinnamon Grand Colombo is ready to recreate the traditional festival of good harvest through a celebratory feast at the hotel’s South Indian restaurant, Chutneys.
Decorated with the characteristic kolam on the floor and greeted with kunkumam and santhanam markings on the forehead, and live music by a traditional South Indian band; Chutneys will offer the perfect ambiance for families and friends to enjoy traditional Thai Pongal dishes with special vegetarian cuisines from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
With the Pongal celebrations beginning at 12 noon for lunch and making a comeback for dinner at 7 p.m., the buffet priced at Rs. 2,000 nett consists of customary soups, salads, starters, mains, rice counters, action counters and desserts with a unique inventive touch, along with a special Pongal counter.
The Pongal Counter, will feature a mix of traditional sweets and savouries like ‘Sarkarai Pongal’ (jaggery and rice mash), ‘Seeni Soru’ (Sugar and rice mash), ‘Pazhamprasadam’ (banana, honey and ghee combination), ‘Aval’ (pressed rice), Sugar Cane Vadai, Sundal (boiled chickpeas) and ‘Kolu Kattai’ (steamed rice dumplings).
Also on the menu are specialised dishes such as ‘Keerai Rasam’ (green herb soup), ‘Karamani Vadai’ (black-eye bean fried dumplings), ‘Pesara Pappu Chilla’ (tawa roast green gram dhal mixer), ‘Pineapple pachadi’ (pineapple in curd mixed), ‘Vendakkai Puli Kozhambu’ (ladies finger in tamarind curry), ‘Palkatti Malli Peratal’ (paneer simmered with green coriander), ‘Undala Pulusu’ (dhal dumplings cooked in tangy gravy), Hyderbad vegetable biriyani, Palaakkad biriyani (raw jack-fruit biriyani) and ‘Chowwaey Prathan’ (tapioca sego with jiggery) among others.
