Much anticipated Hair and Beauty extravaganza of the year   The Hair and Beauty International 2014 – the ultimate Hair and Beauty extravaganza is all set to be held with much glitz and glamour between 15 to 17 February at the Galadari Hotel Colombo. The Hair and Beauty festival which comprises of an International Exhibition and a series of competitions is presented through the collaborative efforts of the Hair and Beauty Cluster and the National Council for Economic Development (NCED) of the Ministry of Finance and Planning and will be held parallel to the 17th National Awards. Be it students aspiring to be professional beauticians or industry professionals, Hair and Beauty International 2014 will provide an excellent platform to display their skills and artistry while learning the latest trends and expertise in the field. Organised with the objective of uplifting and developing the local hair and beauty industry to be on par with international standards, Hair and Beauty International will see a host of competitions, daily fashion shows, demonstrations, trade stalls and many more promotional activities. The festivities will mark their grand finale with an award ceremony and the distribution of prizes to the winners of Hair and Beauty International’s competition series. Relaying the objective of having such an exhibition, Nayana Karunaratne said, “The objective is for the whole nation to participate and to give participants a dose of international knowledge, especially for internal development. Talented and the dissevering should win and the ultimate goal is to develop world champions. That should be the commitment and target for the future especially since Hair World is coming to Asia after 18 years in 2016. I really believe that Hair and Beauty International would create the opportunity to discover the talented people who we can train for such future competitions.”    Broad range of categories Spanning across a broad range of categories, the event will comprise of 23 competitions, with three specially dedicated for students – recommended via academies and including the coveted L’Oreal Colour Trophy – Ladies and Gents. Some of the tested areas in the competitions include Progressive Cut and Style, Day Style on Long Hair, Perm Wrapping, Progressive Total Look, Evening Hair Style, Bridal Hair Style, Fantasy Hair Style, Bridal Makeup, Fantasy Nails, Stage Makeup and Bridal Makeup where their creative abilities, technique and attention to detail will be extensively adjudged adhering to World Federation guidelines by the panel of judges. While all competitors will receive a certificate of participation, the winners of each competition will receive attractive prizes – a Gold Award with a 50,000 rupee cash prize, Silver Award with a cash prize of 30,000 rupees and a Bronze Award with a 20,000 rupee cash prize respectively. The L’Oreal Colour Trophy will be awarded to the best achievers of both the gents and ladies category along with a cash prize of 50,000 rupees. Furthermore, the winners will be given the opportunity to take part in the OMC (Organisation Mondiale Coiffure) World Championships that will be held from the 3 to 5 May in Frankfurt, Germany.   Panel of judges The esteemed panel of judges for the competitions will comprise of foreign experts and OMC qualified professionals, while professionals from the Asian countries will also be invited to participate as competitors and exhibitors. OMC Global Education Director Joakim Roos and OMC Silver medallist from Sweden Emma Ekman are some of the professionals with global stature who will be participating at this prestigious event to judge as well as to train the competitors. As such a pre training workshop is currently underway, free of charge, and will continue until 11 February, providing the participants with creative technical know-how to face the upcoming competitions. Days are allocated focusing on various areas of the competitions and the Cluster stresses the importance of participating to familiarise the competitors with the rules and regulations and finer points. “This is unlike any other competition,” said Ramzi Rahaman. “It’s not only about winning or losing but taking part is this event is on par with an international event that will provide excellent exposure and experience. However, even with my experience I would always want to go for an exhibition as you can pick up many new things, watch and talk to people as well. We have very talented people who need encouragement and this exhibition will provide that platform.” Joakim Roos and Emma Ekman will conduct a special five day training program and the OMC Bronze Diploma Training respectively, for the winners of Hair and Beauty International 2014 who will be selected to compete in the World Championships, in order to give the winners a proper guidance and to enhance their individual styles. The winners will be participating in a series of other training workshops on hairstyles, makeup and fantasy hair and nail creations throughout March and April prior to the World Championships. While there will be a registration fee for contestants, the entrance fee per day will be just 100 rupees.
