‘Blossoms of Hope’, which is the very first exhibition organised by the Ikebana International Sri Lanka Chapter 262 was held at the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, 78 Galle Road Colombo 03.
Part of the proceeds from this Blossoms of Hope, go to the charity ‘Children with cancer’ which aims at helping the families of young cancer patients who do not have the financial means to purchase the medicines and meet the numerous medical requirements of their sick child.
Ikebana International which has over 10,000 members in more than 57 countries with 163 chapters around the world; was initially founded in 1956 by the late Ellen Gordon Allen as a non profit, cultural organisation dedicated to promoting the art of Japanese flower arranging. This form of art goes back to the 6th century when Buddhism was first introduced to the country.
Unlike other types of flower arrangements, the art of Ikebana focuses on areas of the plant such as the stems and the leaves while the blooms are often minimal in number. The spiritual aspect of Ikebana is also a fundamental feature of the art.
