Japanese skincare giant Rohto enters Sri Lanka

By Shabiya Ali Ahlam Japan’s leading skincare company Rohto has entered Sri Lanka’s burgeoning beauty and wellness market in partnership with A. Baur and Company. Catering to both women and men, Rohto, via Baurs, unveiled three products ranges, which are the Mentholatum Lip Ice, OXI Face Wash and Mentholatum Acnes. The two firms said that the entry and launch of world class ‘cosmeceuticals’ will take personal care market to new heights, benefiting customers. Rohto is a US$ 1.5 billion company that owns US-based Mentholatum Company. Highly trusted for its healthcare products worldwide, its network expands over 150 countries. One of the largest over the counter pharmaceutical companies in Japan, Rohto has a market share of 58.8% in the skincare segment alone. Under each range, two items will be made available for Sri Lankan consumers. From the Mentholatum Lip Ice range made available will be the Lip Ice Sheer Colour and the Lip Ice Colour product, under the OXI Face Wash range for men available is the OXI Perfect Wash and the OXI Deep Wash, and under the Mentholatum Acnes range available will be the Acne Face Wash and the Acne Face gel. Rohto products have been priced competitively to reach a wider segment of consumers and will be widely made available by Baurs via reputed pharmacies, beauty salons and spas, and supermarkets. Baurs Director – Healthcare Nishantha Weerasinghe said at the launch that the objective of the company is to provide better healthcare solutions while ensuring the supply of high quality products and services in an ethical manner. “By partnering with Rohto, we have done just this. We at Baurs are privileged to be the business partner for Rohto in Sri Lanka and we look forward to a successful relationship,” he said at the launch which was attended by senior officials of both the companies along with heavyweights of the beauty industry in Sri Lanka. Expressing similar sentiments was Rohto CEO Kunio Yamada, who said that the company was delighted to finally mark its presence in Sri Lanka. “Our two companies are very similar. We both started in 1800s and have grown to be leaders in the industry we are in. Rohto is happy to have partnered with a leading company such as Baurs and we are here to stay,” Yamada stated.
