‘Around the Pearl’ is an annual cycling challenge held over 10 days covering 1,400 km around the beautiful coastal belt of Sri Lanka with the aim to raise funds for wheelchairs for children affected by Cerebral Palsy. Jetwing Hotels is honoured to be on board with this prestigious project as the Official Hotel Partner.
Cerebral Palsy is one of Sri Lanka’s most common childhood disabilities, which are in the form of neurological disorders permanently affecting bodily movement and muscle coordination. In Sri Lanka, there are an estimated number of 40,000 children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, while many cases remain undetected. All proceeds from the Around the Pearl initiative will be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation (CPLF). Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation (CPLF) is the first and the only organisation for children with Cerebral Palsy in Sri Lanka. It was started with an objective to provide educational and therapeutic services for children with Cerebral Palsy and associated movement disorders. Around the Pearl is conducted by ‘Wheels for Wheels’ which is conducted in partnership with the Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation (CPLF), and WrooM, a community of cycling enthusiasts.
Over 30 riders both local and international travelled the perimeter of the entire island and their 1,400 km journey took them from the city of Colombo to Galle, Negombo, Mirissa, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Mannar, and so on. This is the third consecutive year Around the Pearl is being held in Sri Lanka.
The cyclists camped at the newly established Sunrise by Jetwing in Passikudah, a 58 room property which provides easy access to East coast adventure. Located in the beautiful Bay of Passikudah, Sunrise by Jetwing overlooks the Indian Ocean, and is also home to many other indulging features including soothing spa time and an inviting pool after a hard day’s ride!
Cycling on to the Northern peninsula the riders stayed at Jetwing Jaffna on 14 April, which was declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena only few weeks ago. Jetwing Jaffna is a 55-room luxury hotel, which stands tall in the heart of the city on the Mahatma Gandhi Road designed in a culturally contemporary style. Jetwing Jaffna already has gained prominence for its exceptional service, and it has to offer a host of Asian, Western and Mediterranean meals in the 100 pax restaurant. It is the ideal venue for the adventurous traveller to relax and regain energy to explore further.
Finally, on 16 April, the riders headed to Jetwing Blue, Negombo to experience the warm and luxurious service the beach resort had in store for them. This simple and minimalistic resort no doubt contributed to the rejuvenation of the mind, body, and soul. From the deep blue cooling waters in the pool to the warm pristine sea water, indulge in everything blue and exotic at this venue.
