An innovative exhibition titled ‘Open Call’ was held last week at the Park Street Mews featuring a host of experienced artists as well as young artists from the provinces, in response to the call by Mobile Library and the Sri Lanka Archive of Contemporary Art, Architecture and Design.
A total of 16 proposals were selected and were exhibited as part of the closing event for Mobile Library. The artworks reflect a cross-section of approaches and mediums. All the works make reference to the books in the library. Some take the form of book-based works, while others are inspired by the content of different books and a few are created with the actual books from the library. The artists featured were: Muhanned Cader – Collage and concertina book, Chandraguptha Thenuwara – Beautification series, Malathi de Alwis and Sharni Jayawardena – The unravelling thombu, Marisa Gnanaraj – Defined dimensions, T. Krishnapriya – Artefacts from Jaffna, J. Abiramie – The four-week drawing project, S. Puranthara – Distortion, G. Samvarthini – Introducing our village, S. Hanusha – Taste of tea, P. Pushpakanthan – Costumes available here, N. Savesan – Child relationship, K. Suresh – Lingham, Pradeep Thalwatta in collaboration with 3rd year students of the Fine Arts Department, University of Jaffna – Roads, Thisath Thoradeniya in collaboration with Kumari Kumaragamage and Janananda Laksiri – Untitled, T. Thajendra – Mindscape and M. Vijithan – Monuments to lost memories.
