Raffles Colombo students excel at Chokolaate Ponds Competition

Design students win top awards at Mother Daughter Fashion Designer 2014
Aspiring fashion design students from Raffles Colombo, the Sri Lankan branch of the leading international design education provider Raffles Design Institute, won several top awards at the recently-concluded ‘Chokolaate Ponds Mother Daughter Fashion Designer 2014’. The event was held on Saturday, 24 May at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC).
In the ‘Mother & Daughter Fashion Designer, 2014’ Category, Ranilu Chathurani was judged to be the Overall Fashion Designer of 2014. Fashion Design student Ranilu Chathurani was also judged as the winner in the ‘Casual Wear’ segment while Preethi Priyangani was the winner of the ‘Sport Wear’ segment. Senior Fashion Design Lecturer Andreea Lonhardt was delighted with the level of participation and the final positions. She was instrumental in coordinating and guiding students in this real life challenging competition.
In the Group Competition ‘Fantasy’ Category, the Raffles Colombo group consisting of Suvini Dulara, Aelesha Ismail, Bloomy Gamage, Uvedha Kamalath and Dilshi Mallawarachchi was judged the Overall Winner. A second group of students from Raffles Colombo, Binari Sachendra, Sandalini Milukshika and Vishaka Madushani were awarded the 2nd Runner-up prize at the event. Raffles Colombo was also voted as the ‘Most Popular Design School’ of the overall event.
Speaking about the achievements of the fashion design students, Raffles Colombo President Professor Stephen Rawlinson stated, “The Chokolaate Ponds Mother Daughter Fashion Designer 2014 is a spectacular event that brings together some of the brightest creative minds of fashion design in Sri Lanka. Through this event, these aspiring young designers are given the chance to showcase their huge talents to not only their peers and parents, but also to an even wider audience.” He stated that he was proud of the outstanding achievements of the Raffles’ students, adding, “There was definitely some tough competition and it is tremendous to see the Raffles Colombo students coming out on top in several categories. These victories will instill a lot of confidence in all students who aspire to a career in design, and will act as a launch pad in making their dreams in fashion design comes true. Admissions for July 2014 are now open and we look forward to continuing our efforts to nurture the development of Sri Lanka’s top designers.”
This was the fifth year that the Chokolaate Ponds Mother Daughter Fashion Designer, 2014 was held with aspiring young designers from various design schools in Sri Lanka vying for top honours. As in previous years all the creations of these young designers were modeled by real mother and daughter teams. Ranilu’s models, Narda & Jade were awarded the top model prize, and Preethi’s models, Natasha Perera and Tharshini Perera were first runner up.
