Sandun Gamage with a career spanning nearly two decades has won much renown for his prowess in the field of photography. His remarkable ability to transform each moment captured into something extra special has made him a much sought after veteran in the fields of fashion and wedding photography. Venturing into photography at a young age in 1996 through the Sandella tabloid of the Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper, Sandun Gamage managed to create a name for himself as a feature-writer and fashion and personal photographer. Still an ardent contributor to Sandella, Sandun has captured the most number of ‘popular faces in Sri Lanka’ from stars to cricketers to even politicians, showcasing class and skill that is unprecedented. “I have covered all aspects, especially in Sandella for nearly 20 years,” said Sandun Gamage reflecting on his long career up until now. “And I am still continuing. Maybe this is some sort of a record in Sri Lanka since I think nobody has done it for this long. Through this long journey, I have covered almost everyone from the star category.” With a particular interest in bridal photography, Sandun first ventured into the field of wedding photography 15 years ago and has carved a niche for himself as he is now widely hailed as one of the top wedding photographers of the country. Since the inception of SA Creations and Sandun Gamage Studio, his renown has grown by leaps and bounds as many seek his distinctive touch to capture and treasure the most special day of their lives. Sandun Gamage’s ability to deliver tailor-made solutions that cater to the specific requirement of each client has gained him an avid fan base, especially within the circle of the veteran and expert beauticians of Sri Lanka. As such to showcase this amazing talent that has been refined and amassed during the past years, Sandun Gamage is now all ready to unveil his second photography exhibition, ‘Sendal My Brides’. Sendal means ‘precious’ and perfectly conveys the value of the bride and how her beauty adds colour and significance to the whole ceremony. “Most wedding photography nowadays revolve around themes that show the bride as a character in a ‘film’ or as a model in a ‘fashion show’,” relayed Sandun Gamage. “But as Sri Lankans, we have a rich tradition, culture and values, regardless of the ethnicity and religion, and as a photographer I want to show all of that. Especially in the future I want to do more wedding photography preserving that Sri Lankan touch and this exhibition is a first step towards that direction.”           The exhibition will encompass 75-100 photographs of brides, dressed by veteran and expert beauticians in Sri Lanka. “The bride is the most important aspect of a wedding and she is the ‘star’ of the occasion. It’s just like how the planets revolve around the sun, if she is not there, there would be no wedding at all.” Basing his premise on the important role played by the bride as such, the exhibition will create a platform to showcase the ‘rhythm of the brides’ where finer points of photography in the Sri Lankan wedding context will be highlighted. Sendal My Brides will be open to the public from 27-29 June 2014 at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo 7. Step in and see the breathtaking beauty of brides captured through the expert lens of Sandun Gamage, as photography for him is an art and life itself.
