St. Bridget’s Convent emerged the second runner-up at the Inter School Drama Competition organised by the Council for Business with Britain (CBB) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce held on 21 October at the British School Auditorium.

The slick and witty rendering of Oscar Wilde’s comedy ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ won the hearts of the audience and earned much applause and recognition.

The excellent editing (condensing a two hour play to 25 minutes) made the play easy to comprehend even for the younger members of the audience and brought out Wilde’s Irish humour with success and the freeze frame technique was cunningly used to bring out the subtle shifts in mood within the play.

The overall production was commendable and appropriate costume and music helped recreate times bygone.

The cast also carried home two out of the five individual awards presented. Shenellka de Silva received the Best Supporting Male Portrayal for her commendable performance of Jack Worthing and Christina Vancuylenburg won the Best Supporting Actress award for her humorous portrayal of Lady Bracknell.

Also in the cast were Tyesha Wijithananda, Dinushki Herat, Natalie Ranasinghe, Tehara Dalpethado, Tahiri Perera, Waahida Mohamed, Siobhan Manuelpillai, Senuri Liyanage, Ameerah Salie, Bianca Dunuwila, Malithi De Silva, Shenelle Abeysekara and Tessara Iddamalgoda.

The principal Rev. Sr. Shermila Jayawardena and the teachers-in charge are to be commended for the high standard of drama maintained at St. Bridget’s Convent.
