Waters Edge, the favourite suburban hotel on the outskirts of Colombo recently staged Sri Lanka’s first-ever mother-daughter cook-off.
Six mother-daughter duos were selected out of a large number of applicants to battle it out at the Grand Final which was held at Waters Edge on Sunday 29 May. The mother-daughter team of Shanaka and Amandi cooked-off their way to kitchen supremacy showcasing a skillfully and tastefully put together dish of their own creation.
Partnering with Waters Edge on this event Knorr which is a brand that has been trusted by mothers for many generations helping them in the kitchen to make great tasting meals, provided their signature ingredients and expertise from their chef to ensure that all teams created tasty, wholesome and nutritious dishes.
All teams created their culinary master pieces of specially designed cooking units created by Euro Kitchen who also graciously partnered with the event. All utensils for the 6 teams were also provided by the designer kitchenware solutions provider.
The six mother-daughter duos were judged by an eminent panel of judges including General Manager of Waters Edge and renowned culinary expert Rohan Fernandopulle, award winning Executive Chef at Waters Edge Buddhika Samarasekara and Knorr’s very own well-known celebrity chef Chathurika. All teams were judged based on taste, presentation, portion size, technique and timing. In true international culinary competition style teams were given one hour to cook and present their masterpiece.
Competition was tough with all teams presenting dishes that would easily fit in at Michelin starred restaurants around the world. Excitement also filled the air as the clock neared the 60th minute. Each kitchenette also emanated aromas making the judges and spectators eager to witness and taste the wares put together by the teams.
Since the challenge was to create a chicken related dish, winners Shanaka and Amandi’s creation depicted the different stages of a chicken’s life using a pasta based bird’s nest with quail eggs, flame grilled chicken on a bed of ribbon salad and vegetable couscous. Judges were amazed at the high level of presentation and taste of the dish as Amandi is only 12 years old.
The winning mother-daughter duo won the prestigious cook-off trophy and also received a ride to Kandy via seaplane courtesy of Cinnamon Air, gift packs from Knorr and SnuggleBug, Vouchers from Euro Kitchen, Ariyaana Spa and Cutting Station, and was also driven home after a grueling hour of cooking in a limo courtesy of Emcee Travels. Media partners for the event were E! FM and Swarnavahini.
Waters Edge is looking forward to making the mother-daughter cook-off a much sought after annual event and Session II will be held early next year.
