In most economically challenged households, women are the breadwinners – the struggle is real as these women put their efforts just to put a meal on the table… The jobs they pursue vary from labour to home based or community based. The wages barely cover their daily needs.
Women in general face another major challenge… menstrual hygiene. This is something she fights in silence and the consequences faced are bad. In Sri Lanka more than 50% of women do not use proper products to combat the situation. This puts them into various situations, the most apparent one is absenteeism – from work, school, etc.
The lack of awareness and also the fact that sanitary napkins are way beyond their budgets are the two contributing factors. It’s a necessity not a luxury – on this note ETD is now gathering information on women with disabilities and mothers of children with disabilities who face this issue and hope to introduce them to a whole new angle.
Together with SINIDU foundation, ETD plans to set up a low-cost biodegradable sanitary napkin production unit where the said women will be trained to produce sanitary napkins and also market them. This will be a new avenue to generate additional income to them.
A win-win situation will be created for a better tomorrow.
