The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) continued with its role as the country’s foremost institute for directors by conducting yet another workshop for prospective and ‘new to the field’ entrepreneurs in the northern city of Kilinochchi recently. This visit was the fifth of its kind, with the previous seminars being conducted in Kandy, Ratnapura, Trincomalee and Hambantota. The last chapter of SLID’s journey in the provincial arena took place in Hambantota early this year. Titled ‘Conducting Business Responsibly,’ the seminar sought to educate and encourage those just stepping into the business world on the various legal and financial regulations that need to be adhered to when conducting a business. Close to 50 participants including many women representing the SME sector of the area attended the seminar which took place at the Kilinochchi International Exhibition and Trade Fair. Joining SLID in this endeavour was the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL). Delivering the opening remarks, SLID Chairman Pravir Samarasinghe impressed upon those present on the nature of the Institute as well as the functions carried out since its inception 13 years ago. Over the last two years SLID has sought to take the message of good business practices and ethical corporate behaviour to the provinces apart from the regular seminars it conducts in Colombo on matters of importance to corporate personnel. The seminar in Kilinochchi consisted of two separate lectures of approximately one hour each. The first session on ‘The Company as a Legal Entity and the Minimum Requirements to be Complied With’ was handled by Attorney at Law Dhanushan Kaneshayogan, who spoke on matters such as the formation and functionality of a legal entity whilst answering the many questions put forward by the participants on the various legal intricacies associated with business and trade. Next up was Mylerumperumal Mayuran, Manager of KPMG Jaffna, who delivered an insightful presentation on the topic of ‘Minimum Finance, Accounting and Tax Issues,’ an area many participants took part in with great interest. The participants were informed of the many accounting issues, particularly the matters relating to tax that were essential for the successful operation of any given entity. The questions raised by the audience showcased their eagerness to conduct business responsibly. The program, which was conducted in Tamil, was well received by the attendees. SLID, a not-for-profit organisation, was joined by Swadeshi Industrial Works PLC as sponsors. It next targets the District of Gampaha which will take place shortly.
