In a move to fulfil a long-felt need in the retail sector, CINEC Campus is launching a Bachelor of Management (Hons) degree program in Retail Marketing and Branding. As the retail sector is currently enjoying a rapid growth, CEOs are looking for professionals who can deliver specific tasks independently, rather than jacks of all trades. Having a degree in Retail Marketing and Branding crafts is a path to employment in any commercial organization. However, because of the specialized knowledge in retail marketing, graduates will have high demand in the supermarket industry. This degree is approved by the UGC and the Ministry of Higher Education, and gazetted in Sri Lanka. Many industry experts and university professors have participated in the development of the degree program and the curriculum. The entry requirements for this degree are GCE A/L examination, or any other qualification of comparable standing recognized by UGC of Sri Lanka, such as Edexcel / Cambridge, with minimum 3 passes in any stream. Since this is a management specialisation degree, it has a four-year duration including a six-month internship in the fourth year.
According to the degree program’s coordinator Anushka Gunawardana, Colombo, being the major retail centre in Sri Lanka, saw increasing investments in new retail ventures in recent years. Out of these new ventures, shopping malls take a prominent place. Furthermore, secondary cities such as Kandy, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, and Matara also have on-going developments in shopping malls, creating a higher demand for workforce. “'However, there seems to be a shortage of required professionals for this industry. No other university has come forward to cater to this demand but CINEC,” she added. Student enrolment for the third intake is currently in progress.
