  • Leo Burnett’s Indu and Eraj reporting from 60th Cannes Lions
The fourth day at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the world’s largest advertising festival was just as eventful as the days past!  The spirit of the 60th festival is high with every delegate completely immersed in the activities here. Cannes has received the maximum number of entries this year with more than 35,765 from all over the world. The competition everyone is facing is tough. It is good to see Sri Lanka stay on the charts at Cannes. Yesterday there were a couple of very interesting seminars. One was by Time Warner Inc. on ‘What Connects in Comedy’. The Time Warner Inc. Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes was introduced on to stage by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and comedian, writer, producer and prolific late night television host Conan O’Brien for an inspiring discussion about what connects in comedy. As an early adopter of social media, Conan shared his perspective on leveraging digital and social tools to build brand awareness and engage audiences across multiple screens. Authenticity and real honesty is important even with real advertisers Anderson stated. The task has not changed in the story you want to get out, but what has changed is how you get it across to people which is now through platforms like social media. Social Media is a real way to keep in touch with viewers, through tweeting or posting something on Facebook. Something like Twitter is so personal we won’t want anyone else tweeting on our behalf, the thing is we never know how people are reacting to what you say, whether they are laughing or frowning. Social media is something that grew and is growing and it’s something that everyone has to get into. The other session which we loved was a translation seminar on ‘Culture as a Creative Catalyst’. Few people have been as successful at utilising contemporary consumer culture as an effective medium for creativity as Sean Combs or as we know him P Diddy as in the recent past. From developing himself to being a chart-topping recording artiste to his number one selling global fragrance franchise, and being a Council of Fashion Designers of America Menswear Design award-winner to launching one of the most successful vodka brands in the marketplace, Sean has been at the forefront of defining and redefining the culture of engagement in the creative process. Along with Steve Stoute of New York-based creative agency Translation, author of ‘The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture that Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy,’ the seminar introduced this innovative pioneer and unearth the insights, inspirations and passions that continues to influence Sean Combs’ creative vision. What we learnt was that it’s important to control your own outcome and not wait. He has that inspiring entrepreneur attitude which is ‘I am going to make it and I’m not going to take no for an answer’ that will take you places. You need creativity to stand out from the clutter anywhere in the world. For the 60th Cannes Lions, the team introduced online viewing of one seminar a day for the public, each seminar was decided following an online vote and the most popular seminar each day is to be screened. Today at 5:45 p.m. local time, you can visit www.canneslions.com and watch a Publicis Groupe/Heineken seminar where Maurice Lévy, CEO at Publicis Groupe, talks to two of Heineken’s brand leaders: Jean-Francois van Boxmeer, Chairman and CEO, and Alexis Nasard, Chief Marketing Officer and President Western Europe. Last night we saw the Press, Design, Radio and Cyber Lions awards ceremony! Every award ceremony feels bigger and we see some amazing work emerging. Press has had some powerful ideas with TBWA USA taking away the Press Lions Grand Prix. One favourite from their work was an IPAD magazine ad on the ‘Anti Food Snob Diet for Time magazine. At the end of the awards we attended another exemplary party. Radio is probably the only traditional medium that is still in its pure form. We are all thoroughly enjoying this experience and learning new things everyday! The food itself has been an amazing experience. We have been indulging in cheeses and the amazing seafood and desserts! We will be giving you our final few updates with Michael here at Cannes soon!
