Record number of students for Preliminary Certificate in Marketing 2014 3rd intake

The SLIM Preliminary Certificate in Marketing (PCM) held its inauguration for the third intake this year at SLIM Business School, Colombo, on 11 June. A record number of students have registered for the Preliminary Certificate in Marketing, the first step for marketing studies offered by Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), the national body for marketing. “The number of students interested in marketing studies are increasing day by day and the opportunities and exposure in the career world are also enhanced equally,” said SLIM President, Kalana Rathnayaka “We saw many students who are employed, enrolling themselves for the program. They see it as a good way to grow up their career journey in marketing,” he added. “SLIM PCM is the most recognised and sought-after preliminary certificate course for marketing in the country. SLIM PCM lays the foundation for further studies in marketing and an entry qualification to the indigenous Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing. This course of study has been endorsed by top corporates in the country,” said SLIM Vice President – Education Ruwan Liyanagamage. SLIM Assistant Secretary Charitha Jayasinghe explained the SLIM portfolio and showed the academic path one could take right up to an MBA. He stressed the importance of following the Preliminary Certificate in Marketing program which boosts the knowledge in marketing and valued throughout life. SLIM CEO Sanath Senanayake stated at the event that marketing is innate within us and it’s a valuable thing that we identify that innate talent and refine it. Being the national body for marketing, SLIM bears a responsibility to educate Sri Lankans to progress in their careers. Many corporates employ SLIM PCM students and recognise it when employing individuals to their sales and marketing functions. They also recognise the PCM qualification at the year-end evaluation leading to increments and promotions. SLIM Senior Lecturer G.S. Sylvester explained the academic part of PCM to the students and the importance of marketing as a subject. He also assured the students that they have selected the best profession as marketing applies to everyone irrespective of their profession and stature. Education Manager Gayan Maldeniya, Manager BDD Mihirinie Fonseka and selected SLIM staff members also participated at the occasion. The Preliminary Certificate in Marketing (PCM) provides basic theoretical knowledge through classroom coaching over a period of three months with a practical assignment where students translate their classroom learning into real world practical applications. PCM offers the young in the working environment a great opportunity to understand the basics in marketing, an orientation to the practice and philosophy of marketing management and thereby confidence to pursue a career. Registrations are now open for this ideal qualification for all budding marketers and a stepping stone towards a Postgraduate Diploma and thereafter an MBA.
