The eighth edition of the SLIM-Nielsen Peoples Awards will take place this March as brands battle to take home the coveted metals.

Held this year under the theme of ‘The True Voice of Sri Lanka’, the awards ceremony, organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) together with Nielsen Research Agency in Sri Lanka, recognises brands and personalities that have impacted the lives of Sri Lankans. The eighth annual SLIM-Nielsen Peoples Awards” will be held on 19 March 2013 at Waters Edge.

The Peoples Awards stand out from other awards ceremonies as it allows the public to rate for their favourite brands, personalities, advertisements, films, tele-dramas etc. No independent person or company can apply for recognition for the awards, and instead the winners are adjudged by the consumers depicting the views of the people based on what is close to their hearts and minds.

SLIM, as the national body of marketing, encourages best practices among marketers in the industry and aligns its annual activities to address four key elements in marketing, research, advertising, brand management and sales.  Through initiatives such as the Peoples Awards, its main objective is to capture consumer insights from the brand users itself and keeping this year’s theme in mind, SLIM has renamed its magazine as ‘Power of Research’ and is published parallel to the People’s Awards.

The winners of the awards are selected through series of surveys conducted by Nielsen, a globally renowned market research company. In pursuing the ‘True Voice of Sri Lanka’, interviews and surveys were administered throughout the country that underwent a stringent process of surveying and assessing consumer insights. The events took place over a period of five months.

Speaking on the theme adopted for this year’s award ceremony, Phoenix O&M Chief Operating Officer Sudesh Sundhara Moorthy stated: “We developed this year’s theme to reflect the role of the people of Sri Lanka in this unique award program – the research findings are given by the people – the ‘true voices of Sri Lanka’ and that’s the ultimate test of any successful brand.  The awards ceremony will include 46 categories, six of which are new additions. The primary themes housing these categories are FMCG, service durables, personality, media and entertainment amongst others.
