The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) recently donated books in marketing to the Jaffna University, with the objective of supporting marketing education at the university.
The books donated covered topics such as marketing an introduction, consumer behaviour, economics, economic and legal impact, business communication, from brand vision to brand evaluation, sales management, analysis, and decision making, managing finance, integrated advertising, promotion and marketing communications, principles of management, innovation management and new product development, international marketing, strategic marketing planning, and research methods for business students.
SLIM President Tilan Wijeyesekera said that SLIM was always in the lookout for methods of developing marketing and distributing marketing knowledge to every nook and corner of the island and the book donation to the Jaffna University was a sample example.
In the meantime, SLIM also offered a full scholarship for the best student of the Faculty of Marketing Management University of Jaffna to follow the indigenous product of SLIM, the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.
SLIM Secretary to the Council of Management Dhanesh R. Jayathilaka said: “Being the national body of marketing, it is our duty to uplift marketing professionals around the country and we are planning to work very closely together in future to assist upcoming marketers in Jaffna by providing necessary tools and expertise. I personally observe that there are a lot of potential upcoming marketers with the right attitude and besides, Jaffna will be our next main region after Kandy and Matara (where we have branch operations) to be focused for further development in terms of marketing proficiency.”
SLIM, founded in 1970 (then called Ceylon Institute of Marketing) with a view to harness the available skills in marketing for the growth and development of the profession, was subsequently incorporated by Act No. 41 of 1980 of the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
SLIM has created a professional educational career path in marketing commencing from the entry level, preliminary certificate in marketing going right up to MBA covering a gamut of disciplines in marketing such as brands, sales and pharmaceuticals, etc.
In addition to providing professional marketing education, as the national body for marketing, SLIM encourages best practices in marketing through national level events such as Brand Excellence which recognises the most successful brands, Effie awards for most effective advertising, NASCO for sales excellence and People’s Awards, which recognises the ‘people’s choice’.
These events not only enhance the image of the marketing profession, but also create pathways for more marketers to reach the boardroom level.
