The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), the national body for marketing, has demonstrated its prowess by winning the gold award at the National Business Excellence Awards 2012 in the ‘Associations and Societies’ category.

The annual presentation of the National Business Excellence Awards is organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) and was held at the Hilton, Colombo on 4 December.

“To be the only professional body to be recognised at the National Business Excellence Awards is indeed something to be proud about,” SLIM President Tilan Wijeyesekera said. “This award epitomises the excellent work done by SLIM throughout the years as a business organisation.”

Elaborating further, he pointed out that SLIM has numerous objectives to achieve in any given year, which include improving the standard of marketing in Sri Lanka, proliferating the knowledge of marketing, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of marketers and recognising and motivating marketers.

Describing the award as “a great achievement,” SLIM CEO/Executive Director Sanath Senanayake said that it shows that SLIM has come a long way as the national body for marketing. Through investments and partnerships with foreign institutions SLIM has acquired new technologies and have been constantly improving quality through the introduction of new processes.

“We like to share this achievement with all staff, our partners and all stakeholders, who have been with us and supported us throughout the years,” he added. The National Business Excellence Award recognises business enterprises that have demonstrated excellence in business, whilst contributing to the economic progression of the country.

SLIM believes that it had scored high scores for financial management, knowledge integration, technological investment, capacity building, performance management and corporate social responsibility, being some of the criteria used in assessing the nominations of an award.

SLIM also won its first-ever international award earlier in the year, when it won the award for the ‘Most Admired Events for Branding and Marketing’ at the Annual Asian Business Leadership Awards 2012 and later bagged two prestigious awards at the annual Global Awards for Brand Excellence conducted by the World Brand Congress for ‘Brand Excellence in Service Industry’ and ‘Overall Brand Leadership’.

As the national institute of marketing in Sri Lanka, SLIM has been promoting marketing excellence and elevating the status of marketing in the country since 1970. Incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1980, SLIM is a member of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka and of ESOMAR, the Federation of Marketing Research Industries. It is also a member of the Asia Marketing Federation, which is affiliated to the World Marketing Association.
